Radio won't turn on

Asked by Scrumyllamajeep Mar 21, 2015 at 02:20 PM about the 1991 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

Question type: General

The radio in my jeep just quit
working. Checked the fuse and it is
fine. Swapped it out anyways and
still nothing. Not sure about the
wiring at all. Took the dash off and I
couldn't make heads nor tails of it.
Also the cigarette lighter still works.
just no power gettin to the radio it
seems. Any ways to find the source
of the problem?

Put a test light across the power leads at the radio. If there is power, and you have a good ground, you either need a new radio or the lead isn't making good contact t the plug. If not, check for power ar the fuse. If there is power there, the wire is bad between the fuse and the radio. If not, you will have to go segment-by segment intill you find the broken wire.

Sometimes the ignition key on my Jeep pulls out a bit and the radio stops working. Try pushing the key in.

The AM/FM quit working on my 2013 Wrangler at 83K miles. CD player and satellite worked fine, apparently just no AM/FM for reasons unknown. Problem was intermittent; radio would work when vehicle was first started, quit a few minutes later, sometimes returned to life again spontaneously and intermittently, but never for very long. Bitch session: Gimme a break., I’m 50 years old and have NEVER had a vehicle whose radio did not outlive all the rest of the vehicle! This is the 4th Wrangler I’ve owned since 1992, whatta load o’ crap. OK, thanks for letting me vent. After checking many websites, many YouTube videos, and much fiddle-screwing around on the Jeep; I finally mailed the radio out for repair. They did a great job and turned it around quickly. $200 flat rate, didn’t give any explanation of what they fixed, 1 year warranty, and it’s working like a champ. I have a Jeep JK Wrangler - same problem with the radio. The radio's termperature needs to be warm enough for the amplifier portion to work. There is something that just goes bad after awhile in the internal circuitry in the amplifier section of the radio. Pretty common problem. Chuck the radio and buy a new one.

My Kenwood DDX470 stopped working while I was using an electric jack connected to the cigarette outlet. The outlet continued to work and the stereo reset button would flash but the screen wouldn't come on. I checked the stereo fuse, the radio fuse, all the wiring, reset the stereo, unplugged the battery, and still couldn't figure out why power was going to the stereo but I wasn't getting a display or any sign that the stereo worked except a flashing light. I finally checked my M6 power outlet 1 (acc) fuse and found that it had blown. Problem solved. At least I learned a few things in the process.

Had this issue on my 2015 JKU. Problem seems to be where the antenna connects to the back of the head unit. If i fiddeled with it while radio was on, it would come in and out. I think its a bad design. Used some WD-40 to clean the connectors and reassembled. Working ok for now!

Help!!! My 2008 JK radio quit working. It would go off and on but then would not work at all. I took the radio out and check the wiring harness and it is getting power. Put a new radio in and it won’t power on at all. Checked the fuse box and all is good. It there a inline fuse or does any one have any other thoughts?

If you have radio problems with your Jeep Wrangler, disconnecting the battery is one of the best ways to reset the system. Simply unplug the battery before re-plugging it in after waiting 5 to 10 minutes. Find more on: https://windupradio.com/reset-jeep-wrangler-radio/
