What is causing ugly noises from the right front wheel on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee with 4WD, automatic transmission, and the 4.0 L six
cylinder engine.  I shifted into four wheel drive to get clear of some snow and after
taking it out of four wheel drive there is a very pronounced rattling noise coming from
the right front wheel.  When I shift back into 4WD there is a really loud rhythmic
banging sound coming from that wheel.  I am trying to figure out what needs to be
replaced. Would the U-joints be the problem or the wheel hub?

Interesting because there is a subtle vibration in the steering wheel. Roughly how much would it cost to replace both hubs?

Best part about Cherokees is all the parts are cheap and easy to install. A set on ebay for a 1996 Cherokee costs 67.00 US and 61.00 shipping to my location. Check out the pabst boys on youtube they have a awesome video on how to change the wheel hubs for the Cherokee XJ.

To see if it is the wheel bearings also jack up the front end and try wiggle the tire if it wiggles you need new bearings.
