I changed my water pump do to bad pulley causing
leak. Now if I idol to long my check gauges light
comes on and temp gauge jumps from 220 range
to 250-260 area. I have checked the coolant
multiple times and it is full. I have squeezed as
much air out of hoses as I can get. I never let the
engine overheat before I changed the water pump
is it likely that I should have changed the
thermostat at same time or even just removed it
completely I live in Naples FL and it is very hot here

It may need a thermostat or a coolant cap or other issues too, as a precaution I like to change thermostat when doing a water pump and use the OEM versions, and follow the repair book procedure to bleed air out, Like some hints are to raise the frontend slightly while bleeding out air, if cap gasket is bad you will need a new one, one possible reason is clogged or clogging up radiator or even head gasket, may not be a bad idea to check compression on all cylinders to confirm, also test for exhaust in coolant test, just so your not wasting time and money fixing items not needing replaced and also make sure your cooling fans work as intended too.
