1999 Jeep Cherokee Overheating

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 1999 Jeep Cherokee.  Supposedly it just had $2k worth of work on it and
the seller said it runs with no issues.  However, I've had problems with it overheating.  It
will run fine, sometimes slightly hot (just over half way on the gauge) and then all of a
sudden the temperature will spike.  I've checked coolant levels and have replaced the
radiator cap...nothing has worked yet.  Any suggestions?

I have this same exact problem in my 99 Jeep Cherokee sport and just had my radiator and thermostat replaced, my fan is spinning. I tried burping the radiator and that didn't seem to work. Shop said they don't think it's the head gaskets.. but they "dont know".

@faus11 took mine to the shop. Similar situation going on. They've put in new thermostat, checked the radiator for blocks, flushed the system, checked the head and gasket for leaks, and checked the water pump. It's running better but the temp spikes sometimes still... Keep you posted. Do the same as well please

If the hoses have been replaced, you must be careful to remove the inner spring from the old lower radiator hose and install it in the new hose. If the spring is rusted out, get a new one (cheap part). The cooling system creates negative pressure on that lower radiator hose and will collapse it, resulting in no coolant flow. There is a good chance that is your issue if it is happening in suddenly with extreme temperature spikes.
