99 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 Ford Explorer that needs a
transmission. I've been driving it for 13 years
and it has 186,000 miles on it. My mechanic
has a used transmission on the lot that he will
give me for $200 + labor costs (estimates
around 600 or 700 total) Would it be worth it
to put money into it at this point? It's always
been extremely reliable but it seems difficult
to predict how much longer it will last with a
used transmission.

If your mechanic gives the used trans a clean bill of health or a warranty, I would do the repair. Cars with your miles on them, if maintained, will last another 100K. If you are happy with the car - keep it!

I too have a 99 which I purchased new. If you took good care of the car it's worth fixing, as mine was. Luckily I graduated from school 40 years ago with my transmission guy who took over his father's tranny shop. When I brought it in he suggested I rebuild what I had. It cost me a few hundred dollars over your estimate to install an unknown condition transmission sitting who knows where for however long.
