Humming noise from rear or right rear of truck above 70 mph

Asked by PT02063 Apr 18, 2018 at 06:00 PM about the 2017 RAM 2500 Laramie Crew Cab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel and when I am going down the highway all is fine until I reach 70 mph.  At 70 mph, I get a hum from the back or right rear back.  The hum is only on acceleration but not on deceleration.  What could it be?  The dealer checked out the differential and said all was within tolerance with no issues.

No, the Mechanic said he drove two other Rams of the same vintage/mileage and "said" the make the same sound. I own a second 2017 Ram 2500 Laramie Megacab and it does not make that sound.

Just went through this...I have 2018 ram 2500 6.4 hemi and went to 2 different dealerships 5 or 6 different times over a rear end humming noise and everyone told me it was normal...wasn't satisfied with their answer thought it was pinion gears and bearings the whole time myself...called ram case management and told them what was going on and long story short they replaced the pinion gears and bearings and real axle pretty much the whole rear end....quiet as can be now just dont know why they say its normal keep pushing to get them to fix it my truck drives like brand new

Absent of major mechanical issues (bearings, gears, etc.) frequently, "buzzing" or vibrations are aerodynamic issues. Tonneau covers, CB antenna (that's why the Ram truck antenna has that "spiral" in it so it doesn't "buzz"), dangly balls people like to hang from their hitch, open beds with cargo nets or goosenecks/5th wheels, hanging wire harnesses and even brake lines, plastic trim and drop in bed liners or the plastic trim from the spray in liners, etc. Sometimes, it's just an edge or gap between two surfaces. You can start by looking for loose items, gaps and edges and putting painters tape over suspected items, then drive it at the speeds it does it. Hope this idea helps. Even if it is aerodynamic, it may put your mind to ease if it isn't mechanical!

I have a 2500 with the 6.4L and it has a rear axle hum 63-70 mph on throttle but is quiet off throttle. The noise started at 1400 miles. Typical ring and pinion noise. No way the noise I have is normal. I haven’t taken it in yet but the salesman told me not to tow with it for the first 500 miles to let the rear end seat up. He must know the axles have a problem. Don’t let them tell you the noise is normal, it’s not normal.
