Oil changes

Asked by GuruZBF24 Oct 28, 2017 at 01:40 PM about the 2017 Ford Explorer Platinum AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

How often do need to change the oil? I read in the
manual that the computer will inform me when it is
time based on my driving habits, is this true or
should I stick to a miles plan?

The days of the 3,000 mile oil change are gone forever. I like doing mine at 7,500 miles or yearly whichever comes first. I use 5w20 Motorcraft synthetic blend oil (this is not a full synthetic) and a Motorcraft filter. If doing lots of towing or stop and go driving I would change the oil at 5,000 miles or 1 year. In my opinion the maintenance minder will let you go too far between changes. If you have the Ecoboost engine I would suggest running a full synthetic oil as the turbochargers will live longer with the upgraded oil.
