i did jack up the rear end off the ground, put it in drive and the noise wasn't there. once on the ground and in drive, with the weight on the suspension and tires, noise was there again. axle bearing

Usually when a axle bearing goes out, the seal would be leaking the grease from the rear end. It would be wet behind the axle hub, when you take the drum off.
