5.7 350 vortec and LS engines

Asked by White98Z71 Sep 18, 2017 at 02:15 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: General

Ok maybe somebody on here can give me an answer! I'm
22 years old and know a little about the 350 vortecs bc
that's all I have and stayed with and my buddy is 19 and
thinks he knows more lol of course! But we both have the
same exact truck a 1998 Chevy Silverado k1500 but his is
stepside and mine isn't! His was also give to him with
what he claims is a LS Block or whatever and a built
transmission! Which mine was bought with my own
money and I know has a 5.7 350 vortec! I've told him
several times that he does not have an LS block or
anything LS in the truck. He also claims everything's
aluminum! The thing is our blocks, heads, intake all looks
the exact same! How can I really confirm that he does not
have an LS and rub it in his face that he has the same
motor I have lol this is probably funny to most of you guy
but I'm tired of him lying to everybody about the motor
he's got lol! Not mentioning that whoever built this truck
decided to lower a 4wd and make it fast. Can someone
just tell me what the difference is in the 98 350 vortec and
his "LS" block?

There is a large difference between an LS and and old 350. Take it to a mechanic and don't just throw parts at it.

Aa couple easy things to tell, the 350 has a distributor, and ls will not. They have 8 coils along the valve covers. Also the air intake goes to the front of the intake on an ls and one the 350 it's on the top mid. Really they look nothing alike, and are nothing alike

Although Vortec engines are "LS" based they are NOT LS engines IMO. ... You can gain an inch or two by removing the plastic engine cover and cutting some of the plastic tabs on top of the Vortec intake manifold. This may be all you need for clearance and a Vortec will fit in your car.

The Vortec 5700 L31 (Vin code 8th digit "R") is a V8 truck engine. Displacement is 5.7 L. It is the last production Generation I small-block from Chevrolet. The cylinder heads feature combustion chambers and intake ports very similar to those of the LT1 V8, but without the reverse-flow cooling.

The block and the heads are LS but the rest of the engines was made to fit a truck not a car.

http://bdturnkeyengines.com/vortec-vs-ls/ now the vortech 350 that is in a 98 is before the new generation.. as stated above.. where the intake is makes the easiest to notice difference.. middle top is the old styles.. top front and your into the newer generation.. the coils on the valve cover and coil per cylinder is also a dead give away.. chances are your both running vortech 350 but not the LS/vortech new style.. http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/0901gmhtp-ls1-ls6-ls2-ls3-l99-ls4-ls7-ls9-lsa-engine- history/ https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/category/LS.html they do make new intakes for the LS/vortech that accommodate a carb.. but are super rare https://dustrunnersauto.com/chevy-ls-engines/

I am an old and fan, I started w/A 283, and had loads of fun. I bought a truck with a 4.8, & was amazed to find out the way the crank is "cross drilled". The way the crank is held in place by the saddles is WAY superior to the AN of yesteryear.

I have a 1999 Tahoe with the same engine and 188,000 miles. Only engine work was intake manifold gasket replacement due to bad GM anti freeze.

Hey bud. I'm not see'n a date from when you made this post so may be way late. But a 5.7 vortex has an spark plug wires an a cap. A ls engine has coil packs over each cylinder. So pretty easy to spot. Along with a few others but that one is the quickest an easiest way to spot it an call him out on it. Good luck bud

The engine block design is totally different. No.. the parts will not fit. The LS engine is a new design that makes it the 3rd generation of Chevy small block engines. Buy the Motorbooks publication GM LS Series Engines ISBN: 13: 978-0-7603-3609-0 c. 2011 $ 29.99 US Quartoknows.com You can also download a manual on the LS Englnes. Here is a link on Amazon for the books: https://www.amazon.com/GM-LS-Engines- Complete-Motorbooks/dp/0760336091

My 1998 had a intake gasket went out at 75,000 miles and my shop said he has replaced a lot of them! So if you have bad gas mileage, have your intake checked for a bad gasket, now I get at least 17-19 mpg in town.

Is the 350 vortech in a 98 Silverado fuel injected or does it have a carb

Another good area to check is the lower end of both. The vortec still had the small main caps inside a steal pan. The LS has a redesigned lower end simular to a diesel engine, in that the crank is completely encased. The main caps are the width of the block and have an additional bolt running in each side. Horizontal. I hear they can still be destroyed, but i dont know anyone who has.
