Chevy HD transmission

2nd&3rd won't engage . when I bought it a
few months back the passing gear and over
drive line were disconnected drove it a couple
of months before getting it reconnected at
which time it ran good for about a month,
then all of a sudden it failed to shift while
returning from about a 30 mile one way
commute. What should I start looking at first.
