What could be causing a car to stall randomly when stopped?

Asked by Emily Jan 03, 2017 at 03:27 PM about the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze LT Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2016 Chevy Cruze will stall out when I am stopped at a red light or in
traffic.  This doesn't happen every time and happens so infrequently that I
am having a very hard time getting the service department at my
dealership to take me serious about this.  This started back in October
when the car had under 5,000 miles on it.  I've had it in for an oil change
and tire rotation but that is the only service I've had on the car.

Keep on top of the dealer and make a complaint to Chevy as well. Tell them it is a safety hazard and ask for a loaner car so that they can drive it to find the problem. Make them document everything so that there is a record of the problem.

Please look this up. I also have a 2016 chevy cruze and have been fighting to get something done due to this same issue. Please call the GM corporate offices and complain as well file with the NHTSA and BBB if need be. They have blown me off and don't care to help. Below is the PIP bulletin for this. https://gm.oemdtc.com/7914/pip5507b-stalling-hesitation-lack-of-performance-p018b-andor-p2635-setting-in-high-ambient-temperatures-2013-2017-buick-cadillac-chevrolet-gm-gmc

I've had a similar situation occur with my 2017 Chevy Cruze. Tapped the brakes when someone cut me off to avoid collision - car just stalled/stopped. No bells or whistles or lights flashing on the dash. Placed car in park then placed in drive & hit gas - 1 mph so I turned the ignition off & started car up again. working fine. dealership is having hard time finding out whats wrong

Ya good luck. I am now speaking to the Attorney Generals ofive because GM has refused to help me.

This is ridiculous that they won't take anyone serious. The dealer and GM both told me to video tape myself driving because they don't think anything is wrong with the car. Every time I drive I'm in fear it's going to happen again. I do everything I can from keeping my car from going into that auto stop.

Auto stop is ridiculous but this problem has nothing to do with the auto stop.

480

I don't have the same issue if it doesn't have to do with the Auto Stop. That is when my car stalls. It goes into Auto Stop and never comes out of it.

Then yes I thought you just meant the auto stop in general, you are having the same issue.

Have you read on the PIP Bulletin I posted? I live in TN so in how months my car stalls while driving it. I have already called GM and the dealers and all they say is to put high octane fuel in the car and to keep in covered garage and to not let idle for a long period of time. I live near Nashville which is impossible to stay out of traffic. And I refuse to continue to put high octane fuel in like they want. I didn't buy a 4 cylinder to spend the extra money on high octane fuel. I would have bought a sports car. After several close calls of almost getting slammed into by several cars and a semi GM still states that I don't qualify for assistance or a buyback.

Absolutely! I'll definitely share whatever the dealership finds out...if anything. I did a little research of my own & found out there's a few things that COULD BE the cause...out of fuel, alternator issues, malfunctioning ignition switch, fuel pump or malfunctioning sensors. In my case, it wasn't due to lack of fuel b/cdashboard didn't lit up. I doubt it would be the ignition switch b/c car is still pretty brand new - I only bought it like Dec 2016. We shall see...

I️ also have had these problems since I’ve had my Cruze. I’ve done a lot of research and it is electrical and transmission. But there are various reasons towards the electrical. Look up the chevy Cruze recalls to see all the possibilities. Transmission is a big part of it though for sure

Robert - what year is your Cruze? Just curious. If there are recorded recalls how come the tech guy couldn't find anything when he was typing in the description I gave him? The tech guy acted like I was speaking a different language anyway. Everyone who is following: the tech's were "unable to duplicate the problem". They had my car & drove it for a good 2-4 days but were unable to duplicate the conditions/problems. But they have it on record in my file & I'm advised to call them immediately should it happen again. I was half tempted to throw all the reasons I found in my research at the tech guy to see what he would have said. But I also feel that I wouldn't have gotten very far either because when I first spoke to him he kept asking whether the engine had shut off completely or not... I just hope & pray this doesn't happen again.

I had the same problem with my 2017 chevy cruze stalling.Dealer kept saying nothing was wrong but I pushed the issue and called GM and they had a special person come to the dealer to figure out the problem and they did.Haven't had a problem since.

Mine just started doing this today. I just got it back on Friday from an oil change and the safety recall on the fuel canister. They also did a transmission check as I was having wierd things with it being stuck in 3000 RPM's. They said nothing was wrong with the transmission. Then today, it turned all the way off at a stop sign and now it takes 3-4 key turns to turn the car on. Taking it to the mechanic today. (2016 cruz LS w/ a little under 25k miles)

I have 11 months left in my lease. I am so disappointed how GM and my dealership (who I've purchased 3 cars from and sent them additional business) has treated me in this entire situation. In 11 months, I'm turning in the key, and I'll be done with the dealer and GM. I'm so afraid something bad will happen every time I drive my car. I feel bad turning it in knowing it will be someone else's problem. But I can't wait to be done with this car and these issues that no one at GM or the dealer will take serious.

I found out that the Cruz, at least the year I have 2013, were built with an electronic braking system. So when the battery fails, which is another thing I found out is only good for 2 years due to all the reliance on it, it affects everything else. Fact is, I charged my battery, good for a couple weeks and that's it. Every 2 years, get used to it and blame the lame but don't take it to the rip off shops that know this.

I have a 2017 Chevy Cruze. It has stalled out loses power while accelerating no codes. Car has been in 5 times 1 drive with tech in the car very intermittent didn’t happen while tech was in the car they say they can’t duplicate. GM told me there is nothing wrong with the car and closed my case as dissatisfied. Lemon law in Arizona is 2 years 24000 miles. We are at a little over 20000. Now what. They don’t care if my wife stalls out and gets in an accident with my kids in the car. Will never buy a Chevy again.

I bought my car brand new last year (2017 Chevy Cruze). Two months after I bought the car, the issue started. I live in Las Vegas but every time I have gone to the dealership to inform the service department, they tell me the same thing; increase the octane in my car. I have done octane boosters, increased the octane and still have the same problem. I finally got angry yesterday and called the Detroit office and they are having someone investigate it. My fiance drives a 2017 vehicle and uses regular octane gas and his car does not stall out when the air conditioning is running. Why is mine? I'm tired of the excuses!!! Maybe now someone will finally do something about this issue!

I'm having the same issue with are 2017 Cruze TD. It will shut down when at stops. My wife stopped to turn into the driveway and after the autostop did its thi g it wouldn't turn back on. Had to switch to neutral then turn the car off then back on. Thus has happened 3 times and dealer won't do anything about it. This is very unsafe and needs to be addressed

Well, I have a 2016 Buick Verano. Clearly another GM issue that they will refuse to deal with until multiple people die. Until then, we all have to get prepared. I have had my car in the shop twice over multiple issues. Please, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure you get records of everything you tell them and what they do to fix it. The reason they tell you they can't duplicate/replicate it is so that you go away without documentation of the "fix." Without two actual fixes, you can't start a lemon law case or anything else here in Virginia. I was shocked when i found this out. Also, document how many days the dealer keeps your car to figure it out. After a certain number of days, there appears to be something you can do as well. My car is on day 10. My car stalls/dies down and loses power steering. It has done this multiple times and appears to be a summer thing. I bought it in October and it just started happening in May/June. My car also has a very hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Finally my radio shuts off randomly and takes forever to turn back on. The only thing they would fix the first time was the radio, but they made me bring it back another day because it takes 3 hours to fix. So i did not get documentation or a "fix." Then in August my car stalled out twice in one day. I immediately took it into the shop. I told them that it's dangerous and I'm not excepting the "we can't duplicate it." I also told them the hard shift was worse, the radio had cut off again, and now I had a new issue. The passenger seat beeps at me telling me to buckle up when nobody is there. The dealership tries to make you think you're crazy or just plain stupid. I told them that I don't put anything on that seat after the first time, but it still beeps and says someone is there. So I was asked three more times if I had anything on the seat. i said no. How about groceries. No. How about your purse. No. Perplexed, i get asked again, "are you sure you had nothing in your seat?" I was furious. I said, please don't treat me like an idiot. I told you 3 times there was nothing in the seat at all. The only thing they dealership is doing is changing something for the hard shift, but they were careful to make it sound like ti would fix all my problems until I asked point blank what was the fix for. Then they told me which I immediately asked what would be the fix for the stalling out issues which is the dangerous part. Their answer was to stumble around and say the mechanic hasn't figured it out. He's going to drive it some more to see if he can DUPLICATE the issue. Really??? I have 0 faith in this dealership now. But this story just gets better though....Due to how dangerous a situation this is, I contacted Buick. They said they would send my issue to a "senior advisor" who would contact me within 2 business days. About 2 1/2 days later, Adam contacted me. He told me that I should have been called to pick up my car yesterday and they replaced a part. I told him that I had NOT been contacted yesterday or that day to get my car. He was shocked. Then I asked him if he had talked to the dealership. He said no! He had only checked on-line to see the service records. It was clear this was some nobody with absolutely no authority and it sounded like he was at a call center because I could hear all the talking in the background. Seriously, Buick! It seemed as if he hadn't even read my e-mail! He was rude and told me there was nothing he could do. I told him I wanted a manager. He said there were none still at work. It was 5:03pm when he called. So I asked for the number and he refused to give it to me by telling me they weren't allowed to give out numbers for direct calls. So he said he sent my information on to his manager, Steve who would call me within 2 business days. Yeah, like I believe that. I have contacted a lawyer and I'm NOT letting this go. Please respond here if you'd like to see what we can do against GM. I can't believe they expect me to drive a dangerous car. I even told them the warning that flashes when the car stalls which is what they told me to do the next time it happened. And now that's not good enough. They are sending you away so you don't have documentation to sue them. Get a repair order everytime even if they don't fix it. Take it to an independent mechanic that you trust. You can get that money back if you're willing to fight which I AM! Good luck. Respond to me and we can try to even do a class action if enough people ban together.

My 2016 Chevy Cruze just did the same stopping issue at a light. It was a storm outside and as I was in the middle lane, I didn’t want to get out of the car. I put it in park and even turned it on/off, but would not accelerate when pressing the pedal. When pressing the brake, a sharp jolt. The car even started to shake and I was afraid something would explode. Put the car in neutral and wound up losing control of the brakes. Steering wheel also hard to turn. Had to have onstar call a police officer to get us safely to the median in the storm. Had it towed, but because it was a holiday weekend, dealer did not see the car until 2 days later. They told me they found no issues and it was working completely fine, even after running it under a car was a few times to try to replicate storm conditions. Really praying it doesn’t happen again!

My 2015 Cruze began shutting off when idling in park. The dealership told me twice they could not reproduce the problem and there was nothing wrong with the car. The problem escalated to shutting off when I sat at red lights, shaking and shutting off as soon as I started the car unless I revved the engine for about 30 seconds. It also would not start after fueling unless I had the gas pressed when starting it. A mechanic at my job and I went through the issues to see if we could come up with a solution on our own. After trying a couple small things we decided to look at the evap system. I put a new canister purge valve in. The problem was solved. I now have no issues with the car. Hopefully this helps someone.

Anyone figure out what the issue was? I have a 2017 cruze that i brought feb of 2017 with only 50 miles on it gave me issues and broke down at a red light in cold weather. They repaired that and now at 25,000 miles my car is doing some of the same things you guys are dealing with. Getting off the expressway and it was shaking and acting like it would cut off even when i moved up a little. I was afraid i was going to be stuck somewhere again but i went to the dealership and made a appointment. Wish i could give it back or trade it in without be up side down! Anyway to do a class action law suite or something

To all: this vehicle suffers from bad grounds specially the battery to engine ground, take it off clean well and replace using dielectric grease and it should be fine.

I've had the same issue twice. I have a 2016 Chevy Cruze and last Oct (2017), my car was jerking forward when sitting at stop lights then it stalled before I got on the freeway. I took it in to the dealership, they had to replace the pistons, bearings and rods. It happened again 3 weeks ago, took it in to the dealership and they can't figure out what's wrong with it. I'm disappointed!

I have a 2014 cruze. I am the only owner. My car often stalls out/looses power while I'm driving. If I catch it fast enough I can slam on the gas to rev it back up. But, usually I have to put it in park and restart the engine quickly before I'm rear ended! I'm glad to know it's not just me but frustrated that we can't get answers. The dealership simply told me to add Seafoam to my tank. It worked for a while but the problem is right back. Besides, Seafoam shouldn't be a permanent go-to. I want an actual solution to the problem!

Hi all, I have a rental 2018 Cruze with 7000kms on it. It hasn't stalled out but at a red light on 3 occasions, it sounded like the car had stalled because it was so quiet. Once I hit the accelerator, it powered back, shook for a second, and then continued on. At first I thought it was a new feature to save on gas and emissions (is this the "auto stop" that's someone mentioned?) But after reading this forum, maybe not? I will likely swap this for a different rental until I get my Mazda back from the shop. But thought I'd share with everyone that if it's the same issue, it hasn't gone away on the 2018s.

My daughter GM Captiva died while moving. She got it to a stop, turned on the flashers, then turned off the key and back on. It then started. She would have been in dangerous conditions if she had been on the interstate! I have read that replacing batter cables may fix problem. Something to do with the power leads to the control modules. I also suggest anyone feeling unsafe situation report it to the NHTSB. If enough complaints they may start an investigation. My 2014 Cruze Diesel 2.0 didn’t just stall four times today — for the first time ever — it died. It’s as if the onboard computer just got a bad hiccup and needed to reboot. The first two times, it rebooted fine following “open and close driver’s window.” Then it starts and ran well until it happened again. The last two times were in bad spots: as I slowed through the toll booth EZ-Pass lane at the end of the NJ Turnpike and again after bumping over a pothole (no damage( approaching to GW Bridge Upper Level (express lanes). The reboot didn’t work because the window wouldn’t open! I spent 5-6 minutes in the breakdown lane before I was able to reboot the thing by opening the window. How unique is this?

I also have 2011 Chevy Cruze that is experiencing this random power loss/ engine stall since only yesterday. Saturday I took it to a dealer for appraisal as a possible trade in, ... The next day, Sunday, this started happening out of the blue, having never happened before. The dealer was with my car for 10 minutes without me present and so my first thought was "they're trying to screw me to lessen the trade value". In 24 hours, 2 random stalls later (both at stop signs, thank God) I have no faith in a car I've never been worried about before and can't trade in for another year still. I'm worried and going some of these ideas might present a solution

Here's what's happening, folks: There's a service bulletin out on the Cruze to replace the negative battery cable for free. However, you should also get the tech to check the block on the Positive Terminal of the battery ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE REPLACED YOUR BATTERY, which most of you all have done. The block has several cables attached on the underside which you can't see, and these may have come loose and no one's looking at this possibility. I discovered it simply by manipulating the cable to the alternator and could turn the engine off by pushing it sideways. Everything's ok now. The problem everyone is describing is exactly what happened to me, and now it's fixed. Replace the negative battery cable per the SB, and remove and replace the positive lead to the battery and tighten down on all the connections underneath that block. Good luck.

I stumbled across this today and I wish I would've known this about two years ago when I bought my '17 Chevy Cruze. I'm still shaken up, but my cruze stalled out today while I was at a red light. Usually, the car goes to Auto Stop, but today it went past Auto Stop. When I put my foot off the brake and touched the gas pedal the car didn't move. The wheel locked up and the brakes were jammed up as well. I was just driving the car a few moments ago! After twenty minutes of causing one hell of a traffic jam and turning the vehicle off and on multiple times the car finally allowed me to put it into drive and I was able to move. I'm taking it to my local dealership and I have history with these dealership so I hope to God and everything else that I can find out what's wrong with the car. It is a great car, I have not had any issues. If I find anything worth a damn that will help any of you I will report back.

Dunno if this helps anyone but my roommate has a 2015 Cruze and after replacing just about everything on it (Fuel pump, water pump, throttle body, etc) he took it to the dealer, they checked for the ground issue which is a common problem with these cars and it turned out to be the harness that connects to the ignition coils. The technician said they found it by accident when someone else nudged it and the car happened to shut off.

I took my car down to the local dealership and the master tech identified that the module that controls the auto stop on my car somehow got wet and was causing it to fluctuate and pass the auto stop on the rpm gage and go to the "off" position which turns off the car. The car is still on and will do everything; change gears, play the radio, turn on the lights, run the AC, but it will not drive. It is about $500 to fix. For the meantime, this only happens when I am at a red light or stop sign and have to stop. Sometimes, it will dip below auto stop and hit off. To prevent this from occurring I have started driving in L6 which completely bypasses auto stop or when I hit a light or stop sign, I put it in neutral or park. As long as it is not in drive when I am on the brake for more than a few seconds, it does not stall out. Hope this helps. Also, my car has shaken violently before when I was low on gas and also when I needed an oil change (two separate times). After I got gas and after I got the oil change, it was fine.

I have a 2013 6-speed manual Chevy Cruze and I have been having the same issue. Although my Cruze does not often shut off while idling, (this has happened 2-3 times to me in the last 6 weeks) it mostly happens after I have filled my tank with gas. I go to turn my car on and it sounds like it's struggling, but it eventually turns on. I then go to leave the gas station and it immediately stalls. Usually the third time I turn it back on it is fine, but this last time it stalled A THIRD TIME. I was in the middle of traffic going about 30mph around a turn. HOW SCARY?? I scheduled it to be taken in this Friday. TBD what my dealership says. I've only ever brought to the dealership for anything it needed. I keep up with oil changes, tires, brakes, etc... I even had the timing belt replaced this time last year.

190

I cannot speak to the Auto Stop feature which is not present in the 2014 Diesel models. Now that I've found the culprit for intermittent shut downs, that's never been a problem. As I stated in my post above, the wires into the positive terminal block of connections work themselves loose or otherwise lose their connection with the electrical bus and cause the shut down. An easy fix but not diagnosable when the vehicle isn't moving.

2014 Chevy Cruze, shut off while driving at 35mph. Service power steering, traction control, stabilitrak. Car started back up about 10 minutes later. After sitting, the car did not start up and took about 5 minutes of trying and got it running again. Shut off again when at a stop sign, after several minutes was able to get the car running again. Took car into a GM dealership, they replaced the negative cable to the battery. Thought the problem was resolved until I stalled again travelling at 35 mph. Stranded on side of road for 2 hours. Disconnected the battery and tested the battery, battery was good. After reconnecting battery car started and then stalled on busy road traveling at 45mph. Called police and they pushed me off to wait for tow. Right before tow service came, tried car again and car started and drove to closest GM dealership. Currently, dealership starts it up and test drives it and it has not shut off for the technicians. So far they have done nothing to my vehicle going on 3 days in the shop. Any help trouble shooting would be appreciated.

I have a 2019 chevy cruze with auto stop and an override button. When the car goes into auto stop mode sometimes it shuts off completely. This has almost led to getting rear ended and getting honked at when turning left at an intersection. This began around the 3000 mile mark. I have taken the car to the dealership twice now and they haven’t yet figured out the issue. In reading some of these comments it seems like these cars have a history of this type of issue.

Hi, I have a 2013 1.4 turbo Chevy Cruze with 110,000. Its been an outstanding car until about 6 months ago. Then it started stalling. No warning light. I took it to Midas and the guy accidentally put his hand on the fuse box and the car shut off...!!! And he touched it again and it started... THE FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD IS THE PROBLEM! I fixed that about 3 months ago and the car is running like a top!:love::love:

Hi, I have a 2016 1.4 turbo Chevy Cruze with about 80k on it and I am having the stalling issue. I will be going into a red light and the car will go into autostop and sometimes the engine will cut off completely and I will have to place it in park and restart the car. Then sometimes when i am parking my car it will do the same thing and i will have to restart my car. It did not happen too often up till last week when it happened 6 times in a row. So i called the dealership and they looked at it today. They said that along with that issue i was having low turbo pressure that was popping up. Upon further inspection they said it was a turbo boost sensor causing the issues with Autostop and lowered horsepower. I am getting it fixed tomorrow and hopefully that will be the fix.

I have a 2013 1.4L turbo chevy cruze with 194K miles. Yesterday while traveling, AC compressor quit blowing cold air and then I got an engine light stating "SPEED LIMITED TO 81 MPH". Engine was running good, but taching 4000 RPM - it would not go any faster than 81 MPG! Transmission souinded like it was trying to down shift also. (NOTE: I just had the transmission rebuilt several weeks ago). This went one for maybe 30 minutes. I also noticed that my cruise control would no longer work. After numerous tries cutting the AC off and on - I tried one more time switching the AC back on and all of a sudden everything (AC, cruise control) and the speed limited light was gone? This morning it ran fine on the way in to work. Anyone have an idea of what's happening? Thank you.

Help, I have a chevy Cruze 2014 diesel with only 100k. When I’m at a stop or in traffic my car is doing a weird thing. Like someone just hit my car from the back. Maybe it’s the transmission sensor ? If anyone know please

I have a 2016 Cruze, now has 76,000 miles. It always feels like it's going to stall out when idling if I have the a/c on, so I automatically turn off my a/c at every light I'm stopped at. Today, it DID stall out. I didn't turn the a/c off because I thought I was going to turn, but didn't, and the car stalled out. Last time I inquired about this at the dealer, they said, it's typical because the Cruze has a small engine, that's why you get good gas mileage... This CAN'T be NORMAL! It is HOT in Florida!

I have a 2014 2.0 Chevy Cruze LT. last week it stalled on me after turning right and wouldn’t turn back on. Dealership said they couldn’t figure out why but the battery ground cable was corroded so they cleaned it up and got everything back on tight. They also replaced my window motor in the drivers side because while test driving my car they rolled it down and couldn’t get it to go back up. The next day I hit a bump and my car stalled again, this time I was able to check the connections and it started right back up. Today I was driving to work and my locks unlocked and locked again and my car surged to 5000 rpm. Anyone have any ideas or solution to this?

I purchased a new 2011 Cruze LS for my daughter, recently she has been complaining about it stalling for no apparent reason. I disconnected the grounds under the hood and cleaned them with a wire brush and reinstalled. The stalling disappeared for several months then came back. So I looked at it again and this time just disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes reconnected and gave it back to her. That was several months ago and I haven't heard any complaints. If she was having problems with it believe me she would have let me know. I don't have any proof but based on what happened I'm thinking its a random failure in the engine control module causing the problem, and when power is removed and reconnected it reboots to the factory software and runs good until it gets corrupted again. No, it shouldn't be that way but the dealership and GM aren't going to do anything about it, and I want to get my moneys worth out of the car so I will continue rebooting the ECM. Don't know if it will work for everyone, but its worth a try, just don't do it just before emmissions testing as that wipes out the IM learned data. The Cobalt that the Cruze replaced was a much better vehicle, I had one that had 180,000 miles on it when I gave to my son who has put another 50,000 on it and its still runs great.
