Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2006 Mazda Tribute 6 cyl engine, sporadically won't start in either Park or Neutral.  I move the shifter through the gears and car then it starts.  Car has a 1 month old battery.  What could be the problem?

On all automatic transmission cars there is lock out switch on the shifter so it can not be accidentally started in gear. Sort of a safety switch. Apparently the switch in your car is worn out or faulty. It is not consistently closing the starter circuit when you are in Park or Neural as it should. It will have to be replaced before it stops working all together.
