Switching tires from another car

Asked by jmpierce654 Jul 26, 2016 at 01:13 AM about the 2003 Hyundai Sonata V6 GL FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need new tires on my car, and my roommate has almost new tires on their
totaled car. My car's tire size is 205/60 R16 and my roommate's car's is
205/55 R16. Would it be a bad idea to switch these? If not, could I just switch
them out, or take it to a shop to have their tires put on my rims? If it helps, my
car is a 2003 Hyundai sonata, and my roommate's is a 2001 PT Cruiser.

I would say yes, only 3% difference. That will make your speedometer read only 1.8 mph faster at 60 mph. I would do it as long as you do all 4 tires.

They will fit- and make your car go faster, so be careful!

2/3 say yes. What is this 3% diameter? One person seems to think it's fine, and another doesn't. As for it making my car go faster, oh well, I'm a pretty cautious driver so I think I'll be fine.

Tom is referring to a 3% difference in the diameter (height) of the tires. This 3% will cause a 3% error in the speedometer causing it to read 61.8 mph when you are going 60 mph. It is not enough to worry about in my opinion.
