Sonata Serpentine Belt, A/C Compressor, Power Steering...

Often when my son first turns on his A/C, the power steering goes out. If he doesn't turn it on, the power steering is fine. A while back before this problem started he was told that he should have the serpentine belt replaced. Just found out the problem is the compressor. The mechanic said if you just replace the belt and you don't use the A/C, the problem is still there and will continue to get worse. Is this correct?  Is there any way around this? My son read something about an A/C bypass pulley?

The A/C compressor is also used in the defrost modes as well as cooling. The belt should be replaced, if you don't want to use the compressor at all I am pretty sure you could just locate the fuse and remove it, that costs 0$. You could also look into replacing the compressor with a used part from a salvage yard, new is probably a lot of $

That's for your response. Yes, we are getting a used part. So far that's a $400 savings and maybe more as the owner of the shop is looking to see if he can find an even cheaper one. The belt is going to be replaced, too.

You can bypass the ac compressor by using a 82" belt. Feed the belt from the back of the engine at the water pump. Disconnect the power steering line at pump. It's a lot easier if you use some type of hook to hold/maneuver the belt. (I used a bent rebar) Route the belt from the crank to the bottom idler pulley, around alternator, and up to Power steering. Bam! No more ac problems!
