AC fan continues to run after shut off and key removed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 GMC Yukon SLE with 227,000 miles on it.  Today after running the air conditioner for the first time since last fall, when I shut it off and took the key out, the AC fan kept running and wouldn't shut off.  I started the vehicle back up, tried to shut the fan off on the console, but it would not shut off.  Now the fan has continuously run for 5 hours and my 6-month-old battery is now dead.  My mechanic checked it out about a year ago for me as the speedometer and gas gauge quit working, and said that the motor for the cluster that controls all the gauges was on its last leg and there was several other malfunctions in the cluster as well.  I was told that it had no bearing on the AC and heat controls, and since I only drive it in my small home town, I decided not to have it fixed just yet since it was going to cost over $2500 to replace and repair what was wrong.  Could this be what is causing the problems with the fan?

Sounds like a stuck fan relay. Don't discard the battery. It's not "dead", just seriously discharged.

Do you think this would be an expensive fix, if that's what the problem is?

Go to the under the hood fuse block. Next to it is a smaller box containing the three cooling fan relays. Pull them out, one at a time, until that fan stops running. That's the one that is stuck "on". Take that stuck relay to the parts store and get the replacement. It should be under ten bucks. If that's not it, continue pulling relays until you find the culprit. There is also an "A/C controller unit" that may be bad. You will have to have a mechanic locate that for you. I don't have diagrams going back to 2005.
