In "emergency situations", get a small pair of curved jaw vise grips (model size 5WR or 7WR) clamp on 1 to 2 inches of exposed emergency brake cable, just before it goes into the cable housing. Take a hammer and hit on the side of the vise grip as many times as you need to push the cable back into the housing. Remember there are 2 cables housings to deal with. Then follow tennisshoes recommendations and replace the cables to reduce future aggravation.
