Can you defeat the front airbag on the passenger side only?

Asked by Guru94TLV May 29, 2017 at 04:31 PM about the 2011 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Convenience FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A neighbor has a 2011 Subaru Outback Legacy. I drive him around because
he is incapacitated. He says there is a safety notice especially respecting the
passenger seat not to be used because of the concern with Tanaka bad
ordered airbag.  Pulling the fuse disables more than the airbag. Is there any
way just to defeat the airbag for the front passenger seat?

I would ask a Subaru dealer about this. Since it is a safety recall they may take car of this for free.

You could try unplugging the connector under the passenger seat. The AB light will come on, but that's possibly of no further consequence. Still, I'd have Subie do any freebies before resorting to such paranoia-related measures.
