How hard is it to change a timing belt and tensioner in my 1998 Honda Civic DX?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It has 111K miles and I think it needs to be done soon.  There is a loud high-pitched noise under the hood every once in a while...is it related?

Hi Racedad, I'm going to forward you to a website that has a few step by steps, written by Civic drivers, on how to change the tensioner belt and timing belt. http://www.faqfarm.com/Q/How_do_you_change_a_timing_belt_on_a_1998_Honda_Civic_four-door I hope this helps you.

Hey Race Dad! Yes ... YES! You are are almost two times past the point where you should seriously consider switching out your belt. And that noise could very well be related (although if it's loud it's probably a worn external belt). "How hard?" is a relative question. It's not for the weekend warrior or faint-of-heart tinkerer. It's open-heart surgery on your engine. And these days you should be able to get off of a mechanics lift for under $300 in most cases, so if you don't *enjoy* working on your car, you are probably better off handing it over to a professional. Good luck!
