Is this thing worth fixing? **not car savy**

Hello,

I purchased a 2008 VW Jetta in August 2018 and 2 weeks later the steering
wheel light came on. A loud dinging sound was made, the steering wheel is
very hard to turn at this point and the car barely accelerates. When I stopped
the car it would not start again. A local mechanic told me it was the alternator
draining the battery and replaced both for about $600. The same problem
arose in October and I'm still dealing with it.

I can get the battery charged and it drives again, but only for a 30-40 mile
drive before the same problem shows up. When I went back to the mechanic
he refused to honor his work and swears that it's the electrical system which
is beyond his repair skills. I've had 3 more mechanics look at it and they
think the alternator is bad. I cannot afford the VW dealership since they want
$1,100 to replace the alternator. I only paid $2,500 for this car. Is it worth
putting another $600 into this car for another alternator?

Vets brought home air-cooled types, these fueled a big hobby in US, not as big now as it once was, but were built to easily be worked on in the field for war time. Those that enjoy tinkering may find a hobby with VW's. Some say they had to be easy to work on because they needed constant attention. Some say do not buy any models other than air-cooled models as all others sent to the US are payback for ww2. Either way or reality is for whatever reasons, the VW's are built to be hard if not impossible for the average US person/mechanic/hobbyist to fix on their own whether it be tools needed or technical facts/data about procedures to fix them are intentionally highly guarded by German companies so its costly to make those repairs.
