Alternator buzzing cause of other failures?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just replaced the power steering pump and belt, serpentine belt, ac blower
motor, and recharged my AC system. My AC and power steering pump were
making so much racket that I may not have heard it...but now I have a
buzzing sound coming from my danged alternator! My question is, could the
alternator bearing have been the chain reaction that busted all the other
things?? And I'm curious if others have had problems with the alternator on
this kind of vehicle.

If I had to guess I would say the alternator was making the noise the whole time. Noises from accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, etc. are often misdiagnosed. Several months ago a friend asked me to listen to his '93 Cavalier. I told him it was the water pump making noise. His "professional mechanic" told him it was the power steering pump. Not knowing who was right he continued to just drive the car. Until about a month later when he got broke down because the water pump sprung a leak and the engine overheated! He had the water pump replaced. The noise went away. Hope that helps! Jim

Thanks guys! I guess I might just replace it component by component until the spunds eliminated. Nothing much going on anyways!! I appreciate your input.

You're welcome. Glad to help! The best way to diagnose a noise that you know is coming from one of the engine accessories is either with a mechanic's stethoscope or a long screwdriver. You put the metal end of the screwdriver on the suspect accessory and the handle end against your ear. Of course you want to be careful of the spinning pulleys and belts while you're checking the accessories! Hope that helps! Jim
