Temperature gauage

My temperature gauge is not working right,
sometimes when I drive it for a for a few miles it
goes all the way to hot then after a minute it will
drop back down to normal, you may drive it for 10
miles then it jumps to hot then back to normal. It
also will go straight to hot after the car has been
setting for awhile and u crank it then after a few
seconds it will drop. I need help bad
