how to know for sure if i have a transmission problem

yesterday my car lost all power to go up a hill and lately bf that its been
changing speeds on me out of nowhere like ill be driving and it will just jump
up a speed faster and when i lost power yesterday up that hill it finally went
up the hill i pull into a parking lot to look under the hood and it was a little bit
of smoke coming up from the bottom of the engine anyone have any
suggestion of whats happening
