Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had perfect a/c on my 91 500sl Mercedes Because less than 8k miles ago the whole system was completely gone through.Drove car the fan belt broke.Got this fixed and now no A/C.? Help! What could cause the A/C to go out when the fan belt broke. Had fan belt, tensioner and smog pump replaced.  Drove it back from mechanic and noticed the was no A/C. The belt was still lying there and it was verified later that it did not "hit" anything that involved the A/C.  The a/c and the smog pump are on two different sides of the engine.  Could a relay or other controller go out to cause this situation?  Any ideas would be helpful.  My mechanic has no idea why a broken belt would effect the A/C.  Do you know why?  Thanks for ANY suggestions.

Unless the belt is attached to the compressor, that would not be your problem. Are you sure the same belt does not connect to everything - including the AC compressor. If it is a separate belt, most likely the switch that turns the compressor on and off or related relay. Best guess - it was just coincidence that it failed when your fan belt broke.
