Tire Chains for 2016 Subaru Legacy Outback

I have a 2016 Subaru Legacy Outback and wanted to know what type of tire
chains can be put on the vehicle. The owner's manual specifically mentions
not putting them on and the dealer also said they should not be used but
when driving to the mountains the highway patrol may mandate them in
order to progress through a checkpoint. I understand the car may handle
fine without them but it's hard to drive by a mandatory check point without
them.

Low clearance type 'S' cables are what Subaru specifies for use on the front tires only. This information is in your owners manual. If the Highway Patrol requires them you must use them. In some conditions they require that you carry them in the car but you don't necessarily have to install them.

Probably a good idea to carry these devices in your car, BUT, a friend of mine who USED to have a Chevy Tahoe with 4WD told me that everytime he went into the mountains with snow, the highway patrol just waved him by without requiring him to do anything. That may also happen on the Subaru Outback. From what I've seen on YouTube videos, the Subaru Outback is one of the very best cars in the snow.. be safe and good luck.
