2.3L 4cyl to 3.5L 6cyl?

Asked by Guru62C4C Apr 01, 2020 at 09:12 PM about the 2016 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD

Question type: Car Customization

I have 2016 Ford Explorer 2.3L 4cyl DOHC 4WD. I'm
wondering if its possible to swap current engine with a 3.5L
6cyl (police interceptor or sport option). I assume it
shouldn't be too difficult due to explorer's already come
with the option of 2.3L or 3.5L. If that is possible would I
need to swap the trans as well? Thank you.

Sell the car and buy what you want. A swap would be an expensive project.

Agree with F_O_R, engine swapping with todays automotive computers is very difficult to do correctly.

You are going to need an at the very least and engine, matching transmission, computer, wiring harness and the dealer to reprogram.

{{ would I need to swap the trans as well? Thank you.}} Yes and it's way more complicated than you think. You'll not only need the matching transmission and drive shafts but the entire engine cradle, wiring harness and the computers from the donor 3.5L vehicle. This is not a feasible option.

RickMn is correct. Alot of labor and parts to get the bigger engine! I would sell and get what you want. Have a good day! James
