why does my headlights go out after 30 sec

You need to do some testing when problem is ongoing, check voltage and ground for the headlamps. At the moment, I can't rule out the headlamp switch or dimmer/multifunction switch or the wiring circuits. You can usually use a jumper to bypass component, to see if system will start working. Intermittent issues can be a pain to track.

Head light switch has gotten repeatedly hot, burnt out, just replace the head light switch.
