Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 expedition, knocking noise yesterday,
extremely low on motor oil. Added 5qts of oil and
now sounds like a diesel! Super loud. No smoke or
shaking or trouble turning on.

5.4v8 or 6.8v10, 5.4 was under powered for the Excursion. The early 6.8 would spit spark plugs! they sound like a noisy diesel when they do this. If its the 5.4 probably ready to destruct (rods knocking) from running without oil!

But it's an expedition. 4.6 v8 engine. Would your answer still apply?

More than likely you have damaged bearing,s from running low oil,

Wow 5 quarts low and it only holds 6, so it was essentially empty. The 4.6 is an overhead cam motor and the cams were probably not getting any oil at all. I would recommend finding a mechanic that you trust not to rip you off. Or find a friend that works on their own Mustang (essentially the same motor). If it is just a cam bearing the repair should be under $1000 at worst case if the head needs replaced. Chances are that if the motor was that low for very long it might be time to replace it. After all, where did the oil go? If it didn't drip out of a leak then it was burned up indicating a tired motor to begin with.
