2001 Expedition what can metal in oil mean?
I recently had the motor of our 2001 Expedition replaced. Well I've kept a close eye on
the oil and watching for when it should have first oil change. We've driven it
approximately 2000 miles since replacement and the oil has always looked perfect.
Seriously, I've never seen oil look so clear on a dipstick. Well, while my learning to
drive son was driving it ran a little rough. Got to our destination about 8 miles and I
drove off and noticed oil light on. I turned right around and popped hood and checked
oil. It didn't seem bad maybe a little low but, really we hadn't let it sit long enough to
get accurate level reading. I did notice, however, that the color was darker than it had
ever been but nothing unusual, just like the color I'm used to seeing when checking a
vehicles oil. We added some oil, then I started it to watch the oil light. It went off after
a few seconds then it came back on a few seconds ater that. I have left it at that
location ever since. My older sons who have average knowledge of vehicles, not pros
but not ignorant either, took a look, they said they saw metal when they checked the
oil.
The vehicle has gone nowhere since this started. I'm wondering, should we remove
filter, drain oil, refill and see what happens or should I take it straight to a mechanic by
tow truck. How serious could this problem be?
