cruise control not working intermittently

Asked by Dennis_86 Dec 15, 2016 at 02:42 PM about the 2015 RAM 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I picked up a used 2015 ram with only 16,900 miles on it. The day after I
bought it the cruise control button would not do anything when pushed, so
no cruise control. The cruise worked when I test drove it the day before.
After some research online I read that by pressing and using the gear shift
buttons on the steering wheel It makes the cruise control button work
again. I tried this in my truck and it did work and my cruise control has
worked ever since (knock on wood) Has anyone experienced issues like
this with their RAM trucks? I also read that this is an issue people are
having with other similar year RAM trucks.

Typically you turn the cruise control on and then use the steering wheel buttons to set the speed or to change speed up and down. Did you try reading the owners manual?

The button to turn the cruise on/off is on the steering wheel right next to the accel, set/decel buttons. That is the only button to turn on/off the cruise.

I use to get in mine put in the key and just hit start and had same problem on my used 2015 Ram 1500 with 40K on the clock. Solution I found was on startup only turn key to accessory and wait till the computer goes thru its checks then start the truck. Now my cruise works every time! Doing it this way, by the time I buckle up, it's ready to go. I figure on the older than 2016 trucks or those with push to start the on board computer was maybe a 286 or slower computer and got confused on a quick start as sometimes even my gas gauge would only show half full with a full tank!

I had the same problem with my 16 Dodge Ram 1500, so I tried 2 of the suggested fixes which didn't work. I then tried a 3rd fix, where hit the the side if the stealing wheel next to the speed control buttons with the soft under area of my right hand....speed control now working. Wtf is all I can say!

I do both of these things as well. I wait till the computer has cycled through and then start the truck, but sometimes the cruise still doesn't work. I still let it cycle through every time before I start the truck though. I also give a very slight karate chop to the cruise buttons on the steering wheel and then they work fine. Has to be faulty wiring or something... I am going to take some videos and bring it to the dealer again. Maybe they will change the steering wheel module out, only time will tell. It is an annoying issue, one I can live with if I have to as long as the cruise continues to work.

Same problem, it is the on/off switch problem on steering wheel..... Simply"flick" it with your finger lightly and it WILL work. There is a problem with the spring behind that lill switch and if u give it a quick flick, it will work. I've done it on mine 20x and it has not failed.

After 4 trips to the dealer about this issue they finally replaced the whole module on that side of the steering wheel. The cruise works every time now. Who knows though, I may have to go back to giving it a slight judo chop when I want it to work if this module gets finnicky to...

I have the same same problem with my 2014 1500 Ram. Have had repaired twice at the dealership under warranty . Don't really use cruise control often but not it is not working again No longer under warranty Sometimes works sometimes doesn't.. Going to bring it back to the dealer to see what they can do

Good luck at the dealer Guru. I hope you get some resolution. If not just try giving the cluster with the cruise button a slight judo chop lol. Sounds funny but it worked for most of us when we were having our cruise issues.

2015 Ram Outdoorsman 1500 - same problem, Cruise suddenly quit working. After reading this, I have 2 comments: Comment 1) I accidentally bumped the GEAR CHANGE button on the steering wheel. The truck down shifted as I left a stop sign. Truck stayed in 1st gear and scared the crap out of me. (Thought the Transmission Died!) Pulled off the road and stared at the dash until i figured out what happened. Restarted the truck and shifting is all automatic again... Phew. That being said, after that episode my cruise control quit (which i didn't notice until days later). Can't wait to try the fixes above! Hard to believe / I did not connect the two events / hope the fixes work! Comment 2) Dennis 86 is not a stupid person (hey he bought a nice RAM truck!) So why do people bother posting "push the on off button" or "read the manual" ?? I find such comments - Not Helpful and or Insulting. I came here searching for answers. Thanks to those who actually offered helpful advice. The BUCKEYE RAM

I've had the same trouble on my 2014 Ram. Sometimes when I push the cruise ON switch using just normal pressure nothing happens. I found that pressing on it really hard always makes it activate. I have also tried squirting wd-40 around the switch assuming that the contacts may have been dirty but still had the trouble. But pressing HARD has always worked.

any updates or recalls on the 2014 yet? My dealer says most models have been recalled for the cruise control problem, except for mine. Had it in for a check up the other day, they went through the control panel programing, and now it only works 30% of the time instead of 60%....my dealer says the new part would cost $300-$400+

try flicking it with your finger. Occasionally the cruise on my 2015 Ram would not respond to pushing it so, I simply flick it and mine works. There is a small spring behind the gets hung up behind the button and a little flick brings it back.

OK, so my 2015 now works occasionally. I haven't tried the "Really Hard Push" method, or the "Finger Flick" method, but I shall. I did try the "Karate Chop" method, which does make it turn on (not every time though). Clearly, the contacts / spring / switch is a bad design, or has very poor quality. It has not yet annoyed me to the point of ripping the switch out of the steering wheel and replacing (or repairing) it. I don't take many long trips (this is my daily 10 mile / city driver to work). So I may just live with it. I don't see myself spending hundred$ to fix it.

Yeah if I could not of had my switch replaced under warranty I would of just dealt with it not working from time to time. Although I am fully expecting the new switch they put in to start malfunctioning at some point in the future. In which case I will be back to judo chopping my steering wheel until the cruise works lol. As far as recalls on 2014 models, I have not seen a recall on my 2015 model yet either. I would imagine RAM would send you something in the mail provided they know you own the vehicle. I signed up on RAM's website and asked at the dealer to make sure I was registered as a RAM owner with my VIN number. Good luck to all with this maddening cruise control issue lol.

2016 Ram 1500 with 18,600 miles. I am also having trouble with cruise control. Also, there is a new "urgent safety recall" just in case you didn't know. I'm going to go argue with the dealer tomorrow because I'm sure the cruise control will work for them when they test it.

2016 Ram 1500 Crew with 19k miles. Just had the U61 Ram recall performed on my truck and am still experiencing the cruise control issue. It is very annoying so I'll head back to the dealer again with all you guys notes in hand. This better be an issue that's covered under Ram factory warranty. Obviously...this CRUISE issue is an issue.

I hit the area where the cruise buttons are located and it started working. I wish I hadn't because I couldn't show the dealer. They did make a note of it in my file, for the future. I'll make sure to NOT hit it next time so I can show them the issue.

Took my 2016 Ram with 19k miles to dealership for intermittent cruise control issue. Service advisor said they replaced cruise control switch and remedied my problem. WRONG! Picked “Rambo” up and the intermittent issue is still an issue. Anyone have any further suggestions I can give to my Ram dealer to get my cruise control working? Suggestions PLEASE?

I have the same problem with my 2014 Ram . It has been a problem since day one. I have it repaired three times under warranty and it still does not work. As my warranty has expired I am in a battle with Ram to correct the problem. I suggest that you are still you are still under warranty bring it back to the dealer every time it fails to work properly

I’ve had the same issue with cruise control. Mine is a 2016 four wheel drive 1500. Only 16000 miles. Cruise has been a problem since day one. Took it to dealer said to have fixed the problem. Got it back still didn’t work. I was messing with it and pressed the two buttons under on off button. Then pressed on. It came on and has worked ever since. Idk if this resets it or if it was just luck but it hasn’t messed up since.

Maybe the Ram dealer has finally found the issue. Not the cruise control switch...they put a new Steering Column Control Module ($559) on my 2016 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Laramie 4x4 and I now have cruise control working. Thank goodness my Ram was still under factory warranty coverage. So far...I’m cruising again!

I have a 2014 Ram 2500 Power Wagon and live in upstate NY and have always had some issues with the speed up and down buttons for cruise control intermittently working. But recently the cruise on/off button stopped working altogether 2 days ago and then it worked fine yesterday and then stopped working again this morning. I found this forum and tried the “manual shift fix” and it didn’t work, then tried the “put in ACC before starting the engine” and that too didn’t work. I had tried the “pushing the button really hard fix” the first day it arose on my own and it didn’t work. But low and behold I tried the “karate chop fix” and it WORKS!!! Someone mentioned a sticky spring in the button which makes sense and I guess the finger flick method gets similar results as karate chop. My curiosity is if temperature has anything to do with it??? It’s early December but has been unusually cold this year. Is anyone having the issue in warm weather/southern US???? Or are all of us in the north/cold weather???

Just bought a new 2018 1500. Cruise did not come on with the on/off switch. I found that if I pushed the on/off at the same time I pushed the set button it would come on. Then I had to hit the set button for the desired speed.

Dec 31st bought a Ram 1500 Hemi Longhorn. Love the truck. About 1 month in I noticed while driving 55mph the button for my CC wasn't turning on. After pushing multiple times, flicking it, holding it (not hitting it hard even with flicking) nothing worked. So, I tried manually shifting down (my steering wheel has gear - and gear + buttons) then shifting back up using the buttons, if the first time this didn't work, the second time did. However after turning on the CC, I have to use the same method in turning it off. Gear down then up. Hope this helps. I've had it for 3 months now and haven't taken it to the dealer.

Today my 2017 Ram 1500 Limited cruise control would not turn on! Shutting down did not work & I didn’t want to Do karate chop! So I tried the “flick” as mentioned above, BOOM! It worked! Thanks “Quillman”!

Yep, just whack the steering wheel on the rim by cc buttons. We just got back from a 12,000 mile cross country RV trip with our '17 Laramie 1500. Only 1000 miles into the trip the cruise control stops working (oh no!). No matter what I did (messed around with random combos of steering wheel button pushing, pulled over and turned everything off then started again, etc) nothing worked. So I had wife search online on the phone for an answer. Someone suggested whacking the steering wheel with the palm of hand near the cc switches. We looked at each other, wtf? With nothing to lose, I whacked the steering wheel. BINGO! 11,000 miles later (and lots of cc use) it has yet to fail again. ps: The steering wheel recall issue was completed many months before the trip.

Same problem with my 2016 Laramie. I love the truck but have the intermittent speed control problem where sometimes it will not go on. In my experience, intermittent electronics issues are usually associated with a poor ground. Does anyone know how the module is grounded or where the ground for the module or switch is located?

Guys if your having problems with steering wheel controls, it's your clock spring look that up. My 2015 ram 1500 5.7 quad had cruise control issues following by all buttons not working also the horn. $441.00 for parts n labor. Don's auto shop, North point M.D

SOLUTION FOR (2017) RAM 1500 CRUISE CONTROL FAILURE: When the cruise control function fails to launch from the steering wheel control button, press and hold the Cruise Control On/Off button, then press the Cancel button. This will clear the fault and launch the cruise control feature making it ready for use. I have used this many times now and it has worked IMMEDIATELY EVERY TIME. Good luck. Please let us know if this works for you.

My work truck is a 2016 Ram 1500 with 8300 miles on it. I have had the local dealer look at the cruise control that has always worked when IT wanted to. They finally told me FCA is aware of the issue but has no solution at this time. I don't totally believe them and will probably call FCA customer service to see what they have to say.

have a 2013 5.7 Outdoorsman that I purchased used from a dealer - Cruise Control is irritating me to death, sometimes have to start the vehicle 3 times to get it to go, many times it will just shut off while driving, and won't turn back on again. If I am able to get going on the highway on cruise, it seems to be fine, but when I get off an exit it seems to shut off and can't get it to go again unless I pull over and shut off the vehicle and restart. it's very annoying and My 2014 Dart with 2.4 has had zero issues with cruise control, always worked perfectly. It also has 192,000 mostly highway miles due to commuting. Ughhh. love the truck otherwise, the cruise issue is very annoying - tried all the fixes shown above to no joy.

I have a 2014 Limited with almost 50K miles and today my cruise control quit working. I tried letting the computer completely boot up before starting and the flick method mentioned above but no joy. So I pushed the ON/OFF + RES button and the cruise control turned on. I had to use the same method to turn it off, but after that I could just use the ON/OFF button and it worked. This is the first time I have had trouble with the cruise control.

had the same CC issue -- intermittent CC wont turn on -- had already done the "hit steering wheel" and that worked some of the time -- read some of the"fixes" above -- tent out -- pushed on/off button and held it -- then pushed set and resume at same time -- CC came on - - interesting

Just weighing in here to say that my 2015 Laramie with 64k miles has the same problem. A quick tap on the steering wheel above the buttons seems to bring it back to life. Thanks for all the posts here.

Just bought my 2016 Ram Sport 3 weeks ago with 55K miles. Took it on a 300 mile road trip. On the way home went to turn on cruise and no response. I hit the radio volume up and down buttons on the back of the steering wheel then tried pushing the cruise button again, it worked, coincidence? I was spooked though and have not tried to use CC since. Since I still have factory warranty through the dealer I might just have them fix it, if there is a fix, from what I've read they know of the issue but no fix yet?

just bought a 2016 Ram Sport crew with 52k on the clock - same issues here - Cruise stopped working 3 days after taking it home and also noticed the "delayed" horn too. disappointed in the quality here as i hoped my issue was an isolated one. guess i will be back at the dealer to repair soon.

Guys, before you get all involved tearing things up trying to fix that Chrysler product cruise control that work’s intermittently, check your third brake light bulb. I ran into a dodge mechanic and ask him what would cause my cruise control to only come on for a short duration and the go off, necessitating that I stop, shut the engine off, restart and try again only to experience the same thing. He said there are a number of things that can cause it, brake sw, sw’s in the column etc. But he also said that if the third brake light bulb is burned out sometimes that can cause the cruise control to malfunction. Check the bulb! Go figure!

I just purchased a used 2017 Ram 1500 4x4. I have logged maybe 600 miles since I purchased it. Having the same problem with my Cruise Control working intermittently like others. The truck has 27500 miles on it. It's currently in the shop getting fixed...I hope. I will apprise you when I get it back. PS. RIDICULOUS THAT YOU HAVE TO HIT THE FREAK'N STEERING WHEEL TO ACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROLL!!! Come on DODGE!!!!

So, this thread goes back four years and there is still no real resolution to the problem? I have a 2015 RAM that I bought a year-and-a-half ago that has had this issue from day one. I replaced the steering wheel with a used leather one because I wanted the audio controls, but the cruise problem persists, so either the switch in my old wheel wasn't bad (meaning there is something else wrong), or they are all bad. "Flick the switch" or "karate chop the wheel"? Are you fukking kidding me?

20

I know this is an older thread but many people including myself are still having the issue. No one has mentioned the clockspring but couldn't that be the problem? Banging on the steering wheel would affect that connection as well as the switch.

Just thought I'd pile on - 2017 1500 Big Horn...owned a month...factory certified. CC quit just like everyone above. I use the Gear button regularly to shut off the MDS - 4 cylinder headache. Will perform the ON/OFF with simultaneous CANCEL and advise. After that, may just beat on it for stress relief.

Just purchased a 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 with 100,000 km on it. After washing the truck the cruise control doesn't work; once it dries it works again. My husband took off the right front tire and behind the brake assembly found a partially bare wire leading to the speed sensor. It was rubbed off from contact with the assembly. He "redneck" repaired it with liquid gasket to hopefully seal it up from water getting in and preventing the cruise from engaging. Wait and see if its effective!

My 2015 Ram and 2018 Ram 1500 have the cruise control on off switch not working problem. Solution for both of the is to tap the back side of the steering wheel hard, right behind the section with the buttons. Then the on off button works.

I seem to be developing the same issue with my 2019 Ram 4x4. Apparently Dodge isn't to concerned about fixing it.

I have a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Tradesman purchased used and the cruise control worked intermittingly from day one. Started reading the forum and there were NUMERIOUS statements about doing a karate chop to the steering wheel over the button. For more than a year, I just dismissed that claim as rubbish. Then, one day I just got frustrated and did a karate chop to the cruise control button with my right hand and TWALA!!! I pushed the CCB and it immediately began to work and has been working thus far ever sense. Can anyone explain this phenomenon to me!!! I mean, I just karate chopped it once with the edge of my right hand over the CCB and it has been working every since.....OMG!!!

Have 2016 RAM 1500 and have experienced this problem several times. Seems to occur randomly with no explanation. Try this to correct it. Press the Cruise On button simultaneously with the Cruise Set button. Seems to react like pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Del button on a computer. The dash display will show cruise control is now on.

Stumbled across this thread after a 50mile tow and could not get cruise control to engage!!! Ugh! I only use it while towing to maximize fuel and keep me from speeding with a load. Anyhow, what fixes the issue for me every time is to push all 4 buttons simulataneously. 1.on/off 2. cancel 3. plus 4. minus buttons... Boom I get the message Cruise is ready. I have linked my problem to remote starting the truck. As someone else posted, it seems that the key cycles affects Cruise control for whatever reason. I hope this info helps anyone else struggling and dont want to go beating up their steerinwheel/controls :)

My 2018 RAM Tradesman just started having the problem this spring. The Cruise ON switch wouldn't work. I found that if I hit the ON switch and the + SPEED switch simultaneously, it would often fix the issue for a time. Yesterday, the Cruise OFF wouldn't work but when I hit the - SPEED switch, it dropped out. This sound's like a software issue and not a switch issue to me - Recall time if after all these years, RAM customers are still having problems with the curse control (no typo). (In fact there was a cruise control recall right after I bought my new pickup so I will have to explore that as how it relates to this issue.)

30

And here it is: The 2018 recall had to do with SOFTWARE issues which prevented the cruise control from being disengaged by turning it off or using the brake pedal. This is a more serious issue than we're talking about here but it sure sound's related. For more information, Google NHTSA Recall ID: 18V-332.

I have a 2013 RAM Sport Quad. Cruise control stopped working, so after checking the fuse (it was good) I applied the recommended karate chop. Cruise control has been restored.

30

I thought this cure to be a coincidence but I took the panels advice and the last time the issued happened to my 2018 RAM Tradesman, I slapped the steering column and sure enough, it fixed the issue. This leads me to believe a switch contact or connection is corrupted with dust or corrosion and the slap dislodges whatever it is enough to restore the function. Sometimes cures are strange and curious. This issue still warrants a recall since everyone is having it and it can be a serious issue if the cruise control can't be disengaged and one doesn't know what to do.

1 people found this helpful.
20

I'll repost my previous response for anyone new joing the discussion. You don't actually have to perform a karate chop(s) to get it working. You can just press all four buttons simultaneously without the force. Probably safer on the components long term. I've been averaging having to "reset" about once every 3 weeks. @ratpack_44 although I feel this issue needs to be addressed by Ram, I can't however agree that this is a safety issue. This issue is not present for disengagement of cruise control. Even if it were though, you'd just press the brake pedal to disengage. This is a really bad "inconvenience" of a really important "convenience feature". Probably the reason there has been no recalls for it- to my knowledge.

2013 Ram Big Horn-Same problem. My ONLY cure for this was to karate chop the cruise button area on the steering wheel. Now it works perfect. Remember, not a punch or haymaker. Must be karate chop or it wont work. A space Alien told me.

I had the same problem with my 2016 Ram EcoDiesel. Karate chop on the steering wheel never worked, but kicking the brake pedal usually did so I thought it was the brake switch. However, the dealer found error code P0585 which they linked to the Speed Control Switch, p/n 68111384ab (the cluster of 4 CC buttons plus the 2 gear up/down buttons) in the steering wheel. This error code does not trip the service light in the dash. In Canada it cost $187.93 for the switch and $151 labour. Hopefully, it has been repaired. After a week of driving, so far so good.

20

Thanks Guru. It seems like everyone has a slightly different work around fix for this problem and it's obviously been around for quite awhile with no resolve from Chrysler. I use and need my cruise function because I'm disabled so when it stops working driving any distance becomes a problem. The dealers are only guessing and will sell us a lug nut for $2000 if we're willing to pay them. One sure cure is dont buy a Ram next time. I've been driving Ram trucks my entire life so that would not be a real happy solution but something must be done. So far my cruise, that I couldnt make work any other way, continues to work from a single karate chop placed in just the right spot on the steering wheel near the cruise switch cluster. Being an electronics tech all my life leads me to a couple of possibilities but without disassembling theres no way to be sure. Jim

I'm an electronic engineer and this issue perplexed me to no end when is showed up in my 2018 RAM pickup about a year after purchase. I was ready almost sure it was a software issue since pushing multiple buttons would activate the CC and then the issue would disappear for a short time. However, at the suggestions given here, I gave a medium slap to the steering spoke the cluster is located on the last time it occurred and that fixed it. I shouldn't say this but, that's the last time the issue has happened and that was over a year ago. My suspicion is that some kind of connector is at fault and a thin film of corrosion built up at a connection point. The computer inputs use a very low current so this could have interrupted the circuit. It also could respond to a sharp shock, clearing the connection blockage (as would replacing the cluster). In any case, I'm happy until this happens again but knowing the solution (at least this time) works for me. It sure beats tearing into the steering column or paying out $151. By the way, upon buying my pickup, I thought this cluster would be a weak point since it is used so often and I bought a replacement cluster at a cost around $20. Installing it doesn't sound too intimidating but it's still pretty involved. As mentioned, Chrysler should definitely address this issue which has all sorts of implications beyond simple convenience. It's a well know failure and has persisted through a number of years and models. If the air bag had this type of issue, we would certainly have had some response from Chrysler by now. Meantime, slap away:)

20

When my cruise would go out, it stayed out. No cruise for months after pounding on the steering wheel, the switch cluster, moving the tilt wheel up and down, checking the brake switch, pushing cruise switches in different order and sometimes 2 at a time, etc. None of that ever got the cruise working even for a short period. Then after reading a number of posts here about the karate chop I thought I had nothing to lose so I tried it. The cruise has worked ever since. Seems very odd but like all us electronics guys know, theres always a reason. Sometimes a very difficult one to put together logically but still, there is one. Or in this case maybe more then one. I am convinced that there is either a bad multi pin connector, a bad spade lug connector or poor solder connection. Add to that an interruption in computer code on the input side of the CPU and now even if the mechanical connection is reattached the computer would need to reset in order to see it. What doesnt make much sense is why the computer isnt generating an error code. Did Chrysler not create the software for it? Oops! So now we have at least 3 possible issues which explains why the dealers replace one complete assembly as a guess only to have the problem recurr. It "feels" like a combination mechanical problem AND a software problem to me. You are absolutely right in your assessment of had this been an air bag problem Chrysler would have been all over it. After all, failing air bags kill people and that gets expensive. Maybe I'll start looking for a model A pickup when high tech was a seat. Jim

I have this problem on my 2015 eco diesel. Found that pressing the shift button fixed mine yesterday. But I also noticed my usb hub was also out, and when I fixed the cc with the shift button fix, it also restored power to the usb hub in the center console. Anybody else have the same issue?

I'm a sucker for punishment, I got a 2014 Ram ST for work (awesome Truck) within a year of being new the Cruise Control and the ECO light sensor caused issues. The CC never worked properly often hitting the button up to 100 times. Also the ECO light would go on and stay on often, resting only after a recall was done, lost job lost truck had 315,000 km in 2020. Now in 2022 decided to buy another truck and found a 2014 RAM ST, bought it 1 week into ownership CC doesn't work and the ECO light caused the check engine light to go on. RAM says all recalls have been done!. shocking.

I tried the karate chop technique to no avail. I smacked the cross member of the steering wheel with my metal water bottle and presto, it works. Thank you every one for the info.

I'm still wondering if this has anything to do with the recall I received a short time after buying my RAM pickup? That recall had to do with the cruise control not being able to disconnect under some circumstances. Go figure - anyway, I had it happen again about 6 months ago and the karate chop wouldn't work so I hit the engage and increase speed buttons together and it's worked fine ever since. Got to be something that's scrambling the software and a brief transient clears it.

2015 RAM Laramie. Today I tried all the methods except the karate chop (that was next) however, after pressing cancel+resume+set at the same time then hitting CC on/off it worked! At least in my case this seems to be a computer reset issue. I now hope it continues to work.

I have been pulling my 10 amp fuse at # 82 to reset intermittent issue with cruise on 2018 Ram 2500. Today after reading the thread, I tried pushing all four cruise buttons together to invoke CONTROL- ALT- DELETE, and it did a reset of my cruise control function. Thanks to respondent who mentioned this in a previous thread. Cautiously optimistic that I will no longer need to go under hood to pull a fuse to trigger a computer system reset for this function. Mr. Quilman’s suggestion was right on. I read somewhere a while back about holding two buttons to reset the cruise which worked, but the “light flick” of the finger on the button is so much easier. Easier to remember too.
