Starter isn't ingaging intermittently.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We bought a new battery for our 1995 GMC Jimmy, and the next day the starter wouldn't engage. It sounded like the solenoid had gone out. I pulled the starter. It has a lifetime warranty. I took it to the parts store. They bench tested it and it passed. I replaced the solenoid connector, reinstalled the starter. It started fine. The next day I went to the store. When I left it started fine. When I went to leave the store, the starter wouldn't engage. I continued to try to get it to start. on my second attempt it started. Then today I was leaving my house and once again it wouldn't engage. I tried twice more and it started.

There is a solar event going on currently, Cars with older OBD 1 or close to the time will be effected. Any solenoid parts or electromagnetic parts will work on and off. Today's made are what they designed to be solar ready due to a major event that took out over 20,000 batteries and starters in Alberta. best test is . www.spaceweather.com. as a blind test check the site only after the problem shows up. I live on the northern lat's . Best of luck

If Danny's answer was right, I don't think after a couple tries it would start. If something is in the air that is stopping it from working it wouldn't magically start working.

Double check your cables for tightness and corrosion. Also try to determine if they are brittle by bending them. If they don't bend smoothly, that would indicate they are corroded internally.

Thanks I was thinking it might be the cables. I don't know any way I can check them. I think I will just replace them. I cleaned them and they're not brittle, but I don't know what else to try.
