1996 GMC Yukon, strange sequence of events

We have a 1996 GMC Yukon. At first it was
stalling a lot, but would start right back up.
One day it just wouldn't start. My fiance
tapped on the starter while I turned the key
and it started right up. Assumed it was
starter. We planned to change starter, but
then the truck starter making a horrible
sound, so I turned it off and took the key
out, but it wouldn't turn off! Had to
disconnect the battery to turn off. Any ideas
what could cause this?!
