What work can I do to a 2001 Ford Escort to make it look better. I mean body work nothing really over 5k though

To start: I would add a decent looking body kit, something close to $1,200 that way you'll still have enough cash left to do some body work and paint. Once I choose the kit, i'd then pick out a new paint job and tints for the windows. Paint alone will most likely eat up most of the budget, but yes, that is what I'd do just to get started.
