Audi Q7 TDI - engine rattles at low speeds

Asked by Jennifer Sep 11, 2018 at 09:19 AM about the 2015 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI quattro Premium Plus AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2015 Audi Q7 TDI with 12K miles on it.  I have 3 days left in
the "try and buy" period and am trying to figure out if its normal for the engine
to rattle at low speeds or if this car has issues.  Mostly driving through
residential neighborhoods at 25-30 mph, when i press the accelerator lightly
the engine rattles.  If I'm at a stop sign and accelerate rapidly, its fine.  Over
40 mph its also fine.  I would appreciate any expertise anyone can provide!

I am not familiar with this model but if it has a diesel engine, a slight amount of clatter you describe would be normal. I've worked on diesels big and small and they all make more noise than gasoline engines because they have heavier reciprocating parts (pistons) and operate at double the compression ratio, so high it ignites the fuel. So if this car uses diesel fuel (not gasoline) it is a diesel. Be safe and find an independent shop or dealer and list to one of their identical cars. If in doubt, don't buy it. Replacing engines is $5000 and up. So check it out and be cautious.
