Octane requirements

Asked by SLManos Aug 19, 2018 at 10:58 AM about the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: General

Just purchased a 2015 Grand Cherokee Laredo.
Salesperson said regular unleaded gas, owners
manual states 91 octane. Realizing that this
means the car will run optimally, will it hurt the
vehicle using an 87 or 89 octane?

Surprisingly, a salesperson is correct on a technical question. Yes, it would be just fine to run plain old regular unleaded gas rated 87 or 89. The higher octane gasoline blends just reduce spark knock that can occur under heavy loads and hard acceleration. Most modern engines have a knock sensor that tells the engine computer to retard the spark timing to prevent engine knock and damage. So if you are not drag racing this Jeep, 87 or 89 octane is fine and you will never notice the very small power reduction that would occur only with a lead foot. However, if you do experience any knock, go to the next higher grade to prevent damage.
