How do I know when to replace my tires and shocks?

My little car recently had a problem with the
left sides wheel bearings. They were bad for
a while, and I knew it would wear out my tires
sooner. However I don’t think they need
replacing quite yet. But I went to the
mechanic for an inspection, he said my rear
tires are “badly chopped” and that they all
need to be replaced soon. Also on the paper
he circled my shocks and struts were getting
close to the end of life but I don’t feel any
difference so far... I just feel like they keep
lying to me cuz I’m a girl and they think I’m
stupid. What’s a sure way to see for yourself
if tires need to be replaced? Or shocks and
struts?
