Asked by Christina May 24, 2016 at 08:25 AM about the 1999 GMC Yukon SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok so here goes, I have a 1999 gmc yukon slt 4wd
5.7L . Driving down the highway going no faster
than 55 mph it all of a sudden feels like something
is not right when stepping on the gas.  Not the gas
itself not being right but when you step on it it only
would Rev and not move the truck forward.  I get
over to the side of the road and it will not move in
either direction.  A few weeks before that the
tranny lines slipped and dropped fluid all over the
street.  I had those fixed and refilled the fluid and
was fine till this.  (BACKGROUND STORY:  I bought
the truck in 2013 from a "friend" drove it a few
months, knew it had some minor things to deal
with.  Started having problems he said it was head
gasket.  Then one day I was backing up and heard
a loud noise, something went wrong with the
transmission.  That "friend" is a "mechanic" (we will
use that term lightly)  he referred me to a few
things to fix which were either wrong or not
needed.  He finally replaced the transmission
mission.  A month or 2 later the engine went.  I had
it sit for a few months figuring out what I wanted to
do.  I just replaced the engine now with someone
else and under warranty.  After a month or two this
happens.  Please direct me as to what the problem
could be I love this truck and hope it's something
stupid that doesn't end up with me buying another
transmission.  Thanks for any input.   P.S.  I no
longer talk to the "mechanic""friend"

Is it an automatic? Cause it sounds like the tranny filter needs changed or a vacuum mod does it drive OK when cold and get worse when it warms up?

Yes it's an automatic, sorry I should have put that before. It drove ok before this incident but now it starts fine but when you put it in gear (any gear even reverse) it just sits there and revs but will not move.

Thank you very much. I will look into it as I have already replaced the transmission a few years ago and not looking forward to doing it again. I welcome any other suggestions in the meantime. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Ok so we replaced the filter. It was a no go. But in replacing it there looked to be a hole punched in it about a quarter of an inch wide. It wasnt on the new one and didnt look like a factory thing because it was dented inward. Was asked to put it out there... any chance it could be a neutral safety switch? On another note there were no shavings in the pan, just normal dust.

I've have a 1999 Denali all you really need to do with it is maintain it. I bought mine used in 2004. But I have replaced the transmission and the transfer case. Upgraded the radiator to a 3 core not the 2 that come's with the Denali. Replace the shocks with Bilstein. installed updated and improved fuel injectors. New A/C It's cheaper to keep her than replacing her. LoL
