Charging Diesel Batteries

Asked by Jeff Jan 11, 2016 at 03:40 PM about the 1984 Chevrolet Suburban K20 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have batteries on the passenger side and right
side of the 6.2L diesel engine compartment, on
each side of radiator. Does it matter which battery I
hook up to a charger/voltage maintainer?

I would say it does not make any difference if you don't have a battery isolater. If you do I would hook the charger to the primary battery.

I used to just disconnect each battery and charge each separately on my 80 diesel

It doesn't matter, they are connected together. If you leave them hooked up you will charge both.

Yeah, I always thought that would be hard on my 30 year battery charger! So, separate it is

Don’t separate if they are all connected to each other. Apply positive to one battery and a negative to other battery. I’m assuming the batteries are side by side. Charging system will charge both batteries. I would keep on 12-2 on the battery charger. This is a nice tricky charge for them both to charge at same time. Doing it slow is always better also look at acid level, if low at distilled water, NOT TAP WATER. TO APPROPRIATE MARK. Good luck.
