2002 Ford Ranger: Starting Issues

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Ford Ranger will only start on the second attempt every time. The
engine turns over on the first attempt but it doesn't start. I replaced the starter,
and the battery and alternator are good. Does this sound like an ignition
switch, ignition lock cylinder, or solenoid? It drives fine, doesn't stall, and
doesn't give me any issues. I just want to fix it before it leaves me high and dry
one morning.

I replaced the spark plugs and wires over the summer, along with the air filter. The fuel filter was changed about a year ago. The truck runs fine after it starts and fires up immediately on the second attempt. I'm trying to avoid replacing parts just to figure out I replaced the wrong thing.

Thanks for your response by the way. I didn't replace the solenoid when I replaced the starter. I'm still learning a lot about fixing all of this stuff. I don't know enough about ignition switches and solenoids to troubleshoot the problem.

I would use a good fuel system cleaner in the tank and also clean the throttle body.
