Must have been too low of oil, 1 quart was not enough unless it brought the oil level up to the line on stick. Otherwise oil pump may have went out.

Have you tried to turn motor over by hand at crank, if it will turn over then it may be something else. If it will not turn over by hand pull the spark plugs out and try to turn it over, if it will not turn over squirt some penetrating oil in each cylinder it may come loose (let it work on it a few days.

Also if you have an oil leak or just have not checked you oil, Try to check it more often.

If you saw no oil on the dipstick you were at least 2 quarts low. Older models use/lose fluids. Gaskets get old and begin to seep. It's just part of the natural course of the vehicle aging. That's why fluids need to be checked often on an older model!! I'd recommend weekly or at each gas station stop. Now if this was a catastrophic failure such as the oil filter blew apart (it rarely happens but it does happen) or you have an external oil cooler that one of the hoses sprung a leak then that's unforseen. But again, on an older model things can happen. Back in the late '80s I had a '66 Cadillac. I came out of work one day and there was a large puddle under the car. One of the power steering hoses had burst with the car parked. Not running or anything, just sitting in the parking lot. But the car was over 20 years old and the power steering hoses looked original! HTH. -Jim
