Catalytic converter

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

About 2 months ago my engine light came on, I brought it into the dealership and they said I needed to replace it. I
went to a separate auto shop and they said it just needed to be cleaned out using a special engine cleaner. It
worked and my light turned off for about 2 weeks. I checked it and it came out to the same issue so I used the
cleaner again and the light turned off again for about a month. Should I continue cleaning it out rather than just
replacing the part?

There's a problem making it clog , engine may be running rich , try an injector cleaner/ gas treatment , Is there a rotten egg smell once it's warmed up ?

beatupchevy is right. Fix the cause before you spend a grand on a new cat!

I'm the op, there is no way to answer a previous answers directly, no I don't have a warranty coverage and my car runs normally. There has been no smell, no drop in miles per gallon and no change in how it drives. The only thing that happens is the engine light comes on.

The cat issue could be from a previously repaired ignition miss that is now manifesting itself. If you are confident there are no engine issues go ahead and replace the cat. Do be aware the the emissions warranty is probably good for 100,000 miles. The problem could also be a bad O2 sensor. I would rule that out before spending the money on a new cat. Muffler shops can diagnose the back pressure to see if the cat is really clogged or not.

We would need to know what the 4 digit trouble code is. A cat code doesn't always mean to replace it like FOR mentioned.
