Check oil with engine hot or cold?

Subaru actually claims the correct procedure is to wait only a couple of minutes. If you wait until it is cold then the oil level reads high. But that is Subaru.

Some cars take a very long time for the oil to run down, some only take a minute or two. You have to learn how your engine is in regards to oil levels. The good news is that oil level is not all that critical. If it is a half quart down it won't hurt anything.

Another important aspect of checking your oil is to have the vehicle on level ground.
