AC only workds intermittently

My 2002 Envoy air conditioner sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. When it workds the air is freezing cold so I know it's not out of refrigerant.My wife says it works great going downhill but not so great going uphill. If you kick into passing gear and the interrupter switch kicks in, then the airconditioner quits working all together,meaning it never comes back on. Haynes manual says you need to take it to a dealer because everything in the HVAC is operated by a computer. I am currently on sick leave and can't afford that. Any suggestions?
