Intermittent won't start

Asked by Nov 08, 2019 at 09:13 AM about the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 s Touring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2014 Mazda3, purchased new, now about 44,000 miles and no problems until
a couple weeks ago. Intermittent balky or non-start: I am able to unlock/lock
doors, but when I get in the car and depress the brake I get the message that
no key is recognized. Wait for 10 seconds and retry and having to do that
about 2-3 times before it starts (hopefully). The dash warning lights do lit up,
radio comes on, but the engine does not start.I used to keep key in purse
behind the seat and it started fine, now sometimes I have to hold key right
beside starter, or actually touch starter with the key. Or after a few tries it will
start, but once it totally refused.
Now when I'm driving, the ABS and tire pressure lights blink amber and
stay on, or come on for awhile and go off again. The car has a mind of its own
still and starts when it wants to or rebells by displaying a flashing amber LED
on the start/stop engine button and not turn over. Started at 8am, sat until 3,
hesitated but started. Hesitated again at 7 but started on third try and almost
didn’t start at all at 9:30. Not wet; different temps each time (lowest about 45°).
Replaced batteries in both fobs. Checked car battery (was replaced Jan
2019), alternator, starter, cleaned cables and sprayed contacts with anti
moisture. Checked for rodents under the hood (had that problem with a
previous car.) It's been to the mechanic, the Mazda dealer, and is now at the
mechanic again, but no one can find anything wrong. Because of the warning
lights that flash, another site on internet says it may be a brake sensor that's
bad? Can anyone help me figure this out before I get stranded somewhere or
spend a fortune in diagnostics that aren't finding the problem? Thanks!
