2002 4.6L Expedition Engine and Transmission swap - what are my options and how do I search for them?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Ford Expedition with a 4.6L v8 and the Engine has a loud tick.
The tranny is almost gone now.  I'd like to know what make and models trucks I
could search for to find a replacement engine even if it is a larger one that will
work in the truck.  How do I know what year, make and model ranges to look for
to find a replacement drivetrain?

I would look at same year Expeditions and F150's for donor drive trains.

I know you are trying to be helpful, but vague answers that are very generic are not what I was looking for. I already knew the vague generic answer. To be more helpful, I really wanted to know what year range I should look at for my 2002. Lincoln options as well? I'd also like to know what specific engine options I can choose from, like can I get the 5.4L instead of the current 4.6L if I buy the engine and tranny together?

Your best results will be with the same year. Going to other years could involve changes to the ECU, wiring etc. I would not go more than plus or minus one year. Unless you are really attached to this truck I would just buy another one and save all the trouble. I am sure you could install a 5.4 but be sure and get the ECU and wiring that goes with it.

Again, I am really looking for someone who knows the year range, like 2001 - 2004 used the same engine in both the Expedition and the F150. I already know that getting the same year works. I appreciate you mentioning getting the ECM if I do an engine change - that is helpful.

2002 and 2004 are different, I know because I own both, i think 2002 ended in 2003, i am looking for an engine for my 2004 expedition 4.6 but i know a 2001 or 02 0r 03 wont work, it may be up to 09 for me but probably more like 07, every 4 yrs most likely so you would have 99 to 03?
