We recently purchased an '07 P71 with 123K miles and some 2700+ idling hours. Can I use a slightly heavier synthetic oil like 5w 30 without problems?

Yes or 10w30

Why, the recommended oil is 5w20. Use it and the engine will be happy.

In the case of blowby (worn ring seals, and 5w30 will not hurt it or cause less performance in-fact if needed in the case of blowby may want to use the 10w30.
