Keep losing charge.

Asked by Larry Aug 13, 2016 at 09:43 AM about the 2000 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

Question type: General

I have a 2000 ford crown vic. Just relpaced the
alternator and battery with brand new one's. But
after all this my charging system light still comes
on after i have to give it some gas. So my question
is what else could it be and i also checked all the
fuses as well.

There should be a fusible link between the alternator and the battery. This link is part of the wire and there may be 2 of these. Check them to see if they are good. Also there should be 12 volts positive to the alternator and it should be hot all of the time.

The Crown Vic requires a 4G or 6G alternator.

Yes I saw you replaced them, get a multimeter and put it on the back stud it should read 13v and up just because it's new doesn't mean it's good. There is a wire that goes from the back of the alternator to the battery check it rodents tend to chew wires at times

Im having a issue very similar to this op's issue, I don't have a voltmeter handy but can tell by the test light being dim that i have low voltage on the #1 pin/green wire, i need to trace that wire to find the issue, anyone know where it goes ? And what was the outcome to the op's issue ?
