It depends on what the code is and how it affects the engine performance. I would get the codes and then go from there. An auto parts store will let you use an OBD-II scanner and retrieve the codes.

I will absolutely confirm this I have a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria pi and when my check engine light is on I go through massive amounts of gas it is because the computer is de-rating the engine due to the code involving the bank 2 exhaust system excuse me for the lack of real jargon. I simply carry around and OBD2 handheld Palm scanner and turn that sucker off when it comes on so I have all my performance back
