What kinds of problems do 2012-2014 S60 models have?

Asked by syakoban Oct 03, 2017 at 10:11 AM about the 2014 Volvo S60 T5

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Looking to buy a 2012-2014 S60 T5 or T6 2WD, but have seen many issues reported regarding transmission problems and engines that burn excessive oil after 50,000 miles. I almost bought that was super clean and passed a lengthy inspection, yet it had a transmission problem.

Any advice on issues? I've also read that the dealership service departments are terrible. Any thoughts?

Bought a CPO 2012 S60n a few years back. Immediately experienced transmission issues. Severe jerking as transmission upshifted or downshifted. All that was required was a computer update provided by Volvo. Have not had an issue since.

My daughter’s 2012 S60 has same issue. Bought used from a Volvo dealer and started experiencing issues immediately. The car has cost a fortune in major repairs and now needs a new engine. I’m fuming. You buy a Volvo expecting it to last for many miles, as is their reputation, but this has been a lemon since she bought it.

Purchased a CPO 2014 Volvo S60 with 56000 miles. I’ve had issues with this car starting a week after i brought it home. Service Department continuously report no issues found no codes in the system. Yet U just had to have the rings and pistons done warranty covered it but when i got my car back it still isn’t running right I asked Alan Byer Volvo service Department for a diagnostic print out to prove that the car was running with in specs they refused to provide any. There should be some sort of class action lawsuit against Volvo this is outright fraud and they are stealing people’s money.

I have a 2012 Volvo S60, T5, 2.5I. I am the second owner and I purchased it 4 years ago with less than 15K miles on it. It has been well maintained with the dealership and was a great little car until about 50,000 miles when it started burning excessive oil. It just hit 100,000 miles and the engine blew. I'm beyond disgusted because I still have a year left to pay on it and the dealership said that they are seeing this a lot with this model, yet Volvo apparently is not taking any responsibility for the problem, as their only suggestion was to dump it and buy something new or pay over $7000 for a "new" rebuilt engine. Very disappointing, as my previous XC90 was a great vehicle that I drove over 200K miles with no mechanical issues ever.

My 2012 s60 just locked up motor. No oil indicators no leaks reg service and Volvo claims no responsibility. This is the second motor as the first blew it's motherboard and nearly killed me on the freeway at 27000 miles. I have less than 90000 now and the car is a no better than a paperweight. 10000 to 12000 to replace the motor. More than the car is worth at this point. Volvo has fooled me. So dissapointed.

I'm sorry for your experience. Volvo is the worst; the absolute worst.

Please understand I am biased because of my own experience, but have never had a poorer experience in quality of product or service of it. If you have options, take them.

I bought my 2012 Volvo s60 used... it was purchased from a dealer and was "certified". It had less than 20K miles on it. At 80K miles, the engine totally locked up. NO warning about oil/etc. Just died. The replacement engine was nearly $6000. YESTERDAY - at 140K miles, it died as I was driving down the road. Just DIED. Mechanic said a belt broke and that all 5 pistons lost compression. The repair was going to be in the thousands of dollars.... NOPE. Sold it to a salvage yard today for $1500. Very disappointing, as I had my v70 wagon for over 10 years with NO issues at all! Clearly, this series of s60 has a major design issue.

I bought my 2012 S60 2.5L used from the dealership, and i thought i was buying it for a steal, bought it at 43,000 miles, it came with 3 year warranty, only thing that had to be replaced was the power alternator at 55k miles covered by the warranty, until just recently at 77k miles the engine blew, no oil leaks no warning whatsoever, i kept up with maintenance and for some reason while driving the revs started going higher and all of a sudden before i knew it, revs completly went to zero, towed it to my mechanics shop and they told me it shouldnt have had no oil, the engine is locked up, thing is.. it wasn't due for another 500miles. I was going to take it sooner to get the oil replaced too, but by that time it was too late. Now im dealing with having to buy another car and possibly selling the s60 for parts. Im soo done with VOLVO and the BS they sell.

2012 Volvo S60T5 bought new in June 2011. Like a lot of these cars, it started burning oil at a rate of 1 quart per 1000 miles at around the 80K mile point. Luckily, I check my oil frequently and kept it topped off. When I complained at the dealer, they replaced the oil trap/filter housing at 103K miles and it hasn't burned a drop since (currently at 114K). If you're buying used, you have no idea if the previous owner kept the oil topped off.

Most people here seem to have bought the 2012 Volvo S60 T5. Unfortunately, if you did your research before buying the car you would know they had oil consumption issues and piston ring issues. They solved the problem for the 2013 model year.

I have a 2014 S60 T5. Bought used w/ ~ 19K on it in 2017. I have used Volvo mechanics once, to repair a computer issue. Besides that, I take it to my local mechanic and he has done a great job alerting me to some of the issues this group has mentioned above. It now has ~91K and runs fine. This is my 14th car, and I have never had a car burn oil like this one, but my mechanic says that is typical of Volvo. And yes, the engine will be bone dry of oil before the Check Engine light comes on, no kidding. Maintenance is KEY.

Maintenance is not the key! I have took care of my 2014 S60 T5 and nothing but issues out of the car as well as the dealership POOOOOR Service and car crappy car to match! Car looks good inside an out but baby under that hood is a different ball game. They need to go back in and redo all S60 models from 2010-2019 sad just sad!

Have two S60s. 2012 and 2014. Engine replaced on 2012 and 2014 had engine rebuilt. They had the problem of running out of oil and always having to check oil level every day. and still didn't help. Both bought from same dealer and was told always an issue. I wish they would do something about taking responsibility about the issue and really step up to their cars and faults.
