2003 Ford Taurus Noise

My Taurus ran out of gas in a gas station parking
lot. We had to crank the wheel to steer it into a
pump. After turning the car back on when I turned
the wheel while driving there was a loud whirring
noise of medium pitch, mostly happened when
turning left, but was noticeable on both sides. As I
drove it home after work the noise subsided when
turning, but the whirring noise is still present pretty
consistently even without turning. I am not sure
what it is, but there are no leaks and the steering
fluid is fine. Any suggestions?

You may have blown a seal on the power steering rack or introduced air into the system. Check for bubbles in the fluid reservoir or excess pressure if a line got blocked. I would get it to a certified mechanic, racks are not cheap, replacing one can cost about $1,500 so you'll want to thoroughly check out the one you have for problems and possible repairs.
