Starting issues on pontiac firebird 1989 formula 5.0 h.o

I just recently purchase the car. When i
arrive the dude had it with jump cables.
He tried turning it on but it fail. He bang
the starter and then the car turn on but
had trouble staying on. After a few
seconds he tried again, this time it turn
on with out having to bang the starter
but the jump cables were still attach.
Few minutes later we tried it with out
the jump cables and it turn on fine. But
thwn had the car towed to my home
about 20min. Away and tried to turn it
on and it failed. Anyone knows why is
doing that? Need help. Really need it
running.

Bad battery, bad starter, high voltage drop in the main cables, not charging so it is trying to run on low power supply. HTH

What do you mean "hth"?something i forgot to mention, the car has been sitting in the same place without moving or turning on for about a month, according to the previous owner.

HTH is short for Hope this helps. That can make things a little more complex, moisture can get into the fuel system, the garbage they tell us is fuel can pull moisture right out of the air so you may want to put in some gas dryer, good fuel and change the fuel filter, still sounds like voltage problems though.

Ok, good luck, sounds like you may have bought yourself a little bit of a project vehicle. One that's drivable but needs work.

I change the battery and got a new starter. Turns on fine but it wont stay on. For about 15sec it will stay on then turn off. What would cause this problem?

Heres another picture. I was told i need to buy a new carburetor. I need a second opinion.

Well first of all you don't have a carburetor, this has a TBI unit. So unless it is leaking fuel out the seals or the throttle plate bushings are worn so bad that they can be moved up and down, you should need a new one. It looks like someone has put in an aftermarket alarm system, so check that out first about you dying problem, it may need to be reset after you put in a new battery, of course the best thing it do is to take it out and get the wiring back to stock. HTH

I suggest that you get a good shop for this car, as old as it is your going to have little glitches show up now and again and it would be nice to have. Mitchell or a good manual on DVD should do the trick.

So the car stayed on after it warm up. Once it warm up gas was leaking from the canisters. I was told it only supposed pass vapor. Is the canister bad? Or since gas is leaking could it be from somewhere else causing the problem? The gas tank is half full

Find out where the fuel came from, either the check valve is bad at the tank or the fuel as been misdirected by some sort of modification. The canisters should be replaced but you may have problems finding them, so at least drain and dry them as much as possible, and check the vacuum hose routing, if everything is as it should be there should not have been any fuel in the canisters, the vacuum supply would have taken care of that.

I found a replacement. So thats covered. Now i need to check the lines. Is it safe to keep turning on the car?

I would check the lines first just too make sure the pressure and returns are in the proper place and your not feeding fuel in to the purge system. Other that that it should be fine.

I have a 1989 thats doing the same thing but everyone is telling me its the fuel filter?
